For two weeks in a row, the film "Thor Love and Thunder" managed to beat other films and topped the North American box office.
According to an industry report on Exhibitor Relations on Sunday (17/7/2022), this film managed to earn US$46 million or equivalent to Rp. 689.6 billion over the weekend.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, an extraterrestrial viking, who seeks to defeat Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale) in collaboration with his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman).
Reporting by AFP, although it is still at the top of the box office, Thor: Love and Thunder's revenue at the weekend actually fell sharply compared to its debut which managed to make a profit of 144 million US dollars or equivalent to Rp. 2.15 trillion last weekend.
However, this film easily beat other films, namely Minions: The Ris of Gru which ranked second for the second week in a row after a phenomenal opening weekend during July 4.
The fifth film in the animated "Despicable Me" franchise tells the story of Gru, who is still young, wanting to become a super villain together and go on an adventure with his yellow Minions. This film earned 26 million US dollars (Rp. 389.8 billion) in the period Friday (15/7) to Sunday (17/7).
Meanwhile, third place went to "Where the Crawdads Sing", an adaptation of a novel by Delia Owens about an abandoned girl who grew up in a swampland in 1950s and 60s North Carolina. At the weekend, the film was able to collect revenues of as much as 17 million US dollars (Rp. 254.8 billion).
Then the film "Top Gun: Maverick" dropped from third to fourth. The sequel to "Top Gun" (1986) once again features Tom Cruise as a US Navy test pilot named Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The film, which has lasted eight weeks in theaters, has now grossed a total of US$618 million (Rp9.26 trillion) worldwide.
Baz Luhrmann's musical biopic "Elvis" dropped one place to fifth in its fourth weekend since its release by Warner Bros., adding $7.6 million. The film stars Austin Butler as Elvis Presley with Tom Hanks playing his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Another film, the animated comedy "Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank," grossed $6.3 million to take sixth place at the box office. This newly debuted film tells the story of a poor dog who is assigned to protect a village of cats. (Between)
